There you lie, all pudgy and wrinkled at the same time, your little snub nose and chubby cheeks set in a face that seems too large for your head. You open your eyes, and there seems a steely glint to their colour. You gaze up at me with an expression between bewilderment and vacancy. You are unlovely, yet you will never be more loved than you are now. I gaze back at you and my heart melts. You are beautiful.
What is a baby? A loud noise at one end and a total lack of responsibility at the other. In the weeks and months to come, you will cry when you are hungry, you will cry when you are cold. You will cry when you are uncomfortable, smelly, lonely. You will cry when a loud noise startles you, you will cry when something new happens that you don’t understand. Right now all you know, all you care about is yourself. Right now that is just the way things should be. I will care for you, I will see to your every need, I will always be near by when you need me. I love you.
In time you will grow. You will learn what is right and what is wrong, what is good and what is bad. You will learn that that there are others in the world who will need your care, your love. You will choose your course. But for now you are empty, waiting to be filled; a blank canvass waiting for the artist; a slab of marble, or a wooden log attending the sculptor. What hidden glory will he draw from your unshaped life?
Is this how Father sees us when we are newly reborn? Helpless, blameless, dependent? Does he stand ready to answer our needs when we cry out? Does He hold us to Himself, comforting us, feeding us, caring for us, changing us when temptation leads us to soil ourselves with sin?
When He looks at us, helpless and yearning for what He has to give, does he imagine the day when we grow to choose for ourselves the goodness of the new life He gives us?
