This year it was Jekyll Island, GA. On this particular morning I had chosen to take a guided tour on a trolley that would take me and the other sightseers over the island. My husband had decided to ride his Harley to Savannah for the day.
I found myself seated across from a beautiful young woman that looked to be in her late twenties. She was accompanied by an extremely handsome man, who I presumed to be her husband.
We began the tour by visiting the former billionaires’ historical homes of the original owners of the Island. They were truly magnificent. I could tell the young couple were enjoying themselves. The presumed husband was so attentive to the young woman. He held her arm and helped her up and down the trolley steps. The guide gave us interesting details about each house and their former owners. The young woman listened attentively to everything he said and I could hear her husband tell her how beautiful he thought the gardens were and the various types of flowers that were blooming. I could hear her exclaiming of the beauty as he added his own personal details. Several times in the gardens, I saw the young woman bend down and smell of the various flowers. I could hear her comment on how wonderful they each smelled.
Our next stop was the marshes of Glynn. I could see the young woman inhale deeply and her husband commented on the musky smell of the marshes as he inhaled deeply beside her. The young woman seemed to welcome the gentle breezes that blew her long and shiny blonde hair. Her husband gently brushed loose strands of the golden hair out of her face.
We then visited the pier where many locals were fishing, while others were picnicking in the park beside the pier. They also had horses if you preferred to tour the island by horseback. Again, my eyes were drawn to this young couple, as I saw them gently patting one of the horses. The young woman seemed to know her way around horses; there was no sense of fear in her.
We visited several other places and our last stop was the beautiful coastal side of the island. The tour guide led us through the beautiful forest until we came to a walk-over across the sandy dunes to the beach. I could tell by the conversation going on between the young couple, they had never seen dunes like these before. Both of them took their shoes off and began to bury their feet in the sand. It was refreshing to see the fascinating look on their faces. Then they began to walk toward the ocean water, holding hands and giggling. I could hear their startled voices as their feet waded in the cool water. Before we headed back to the trolley, I saw the young man gently drying his wife’s dainty feet with a towel he took out of his backpack.
We headed back to the tour center and I was still fascinated with this young couple and their evident devotion to each other. I leaned across the seat and began to talk to them, asking them the general questions; where are you from, is this your honeymoon, etc. They told me that they were from Ohio and they were celebrating their third wedding anniversary.
As we began to go our separate ways, I looked back one more time to this amazing couple and I was overwhelmed by what I saw. The young couple was coming out of the office and I saw the young woman with a dog on a lease. The dog was excited to see his master and then I saw what was so special about this young woman. She was blind and she had retrieved her seeing-eye dog. Her husband helped her into their jeep and the dog jumped onboard.
This beautiful woman and her devoted husband made an everlasting impression on me. Together they were able to see things that I will never be able to see. I made a solemn vow to myself that day that I would take time to see things not just through my physical eyes, but through my very being. Sightseeing is not just about seeing!
