My temperatureís rising, my skin is beet-red.
I hate to miss church but I should stay in bed.
Our Saturday picnic was quite a success,
But now Iím exhausted from all of the stress.

I think I feel better; itís just ten oíclock.
Perhaps I can still meet my friends at the dock.
A cool morning sailing is just what I need.
Of course, I could still bring my Bible to read.

God understands all and Heís patient and kind;
If I skip church Sunday, Iím sure He wonít mind.
Iíll make it up to Him, next Sunday for sure,
If I finish painting my lawn furniture

Last Sunday was baseball, the championship game.
The Sunday before that my relatives came.
I guess Iíve been missing a Sunday or two,
But sometimes itís muggy and hot in that pew.

My pastor called twice and I must call him back.
I know he will question my spiritual slack.
ďItís just a small fever,Ē I said on the phone.
ďEach summer I catch it, it seems I am prone.Ē

Thought well captured in brevity and good poetry.

Hmmm, you mean we can't use summer as an excuse to stay home from church? :-)
