on a hot Fourth of July,
as darkness spread
like blankets black
across a flashing sky,
a solitary bearer
of unusual gleaming light
blinked it’s tiny signal
a splendid awesome sight...
As I watched with half closed eyelids
and a stomach full of feast,
the last sparkler
now smoldering
and anthems again ceased,
sky lanterns of minute size
in silent unison displayed,
a synchronized light show
in the mossy glade
Wee beacons of the Creator
with exultation glowed,
for freedom won
the price was paid
His grace surely bestowed,
illuminating marvels
declared God’s grand design
fashioned in His image

Rising deep within my spirit
a passion commenced to spark
complacency,
now put to rest,
expired in the dark,
my lips joined cricket chorus
with elevated praise,
for truth that was revealed
in nature’s noiseless rays
Enthralled with wondrous beauty seen
I still sat a captive, drawn
to this back yard
exhibition,
compelled to stay ’til dawn,
Winged determined torches flared
Then faded in the night,
renewed with deep desire
I too would be a light…

One tiny thing: the 'it's' in the first stanza should not have an apostrophe.
This is by far the favorite that I've read on this topic.
Thanks for sharing your gift.

One thing to watch: your tense switched back and forth a bit (present to past, etc.)
I've always loved lightning bugs (fireflies). We don't have them here, because the climate is too dry, and I miss them.
