Heather knew she would always love Vince and she was ok with that. What was painful and mind-boggling was how she fell in and out of love with him. He told her he cared deeply for her and would and has done anything he could for her, but he wasn’t in love with her. Heather appreciated his honesty and was deeply happy that he held her in such high esteem and that she was an integral part of his life and heart, but the ‘boyfriend’ feelings she had for him were always under the surface.
The wind was trying to blow her back down the steep hill
she was walking up and a cold, fine rain was stinging her face. Heather welcomed the discomfort and physical challenge. Anything to even momentarily get her mind off the intense love that could never be returned.
The still small voice has been whispering to her for days to ‘praise the Lord’. That’s all the voice said. Heather was beginning to realize that the simplicity of just calling out to God to thank Him for all the good He has done for her would be a way of freeing herself from emotions she didn’t seem to have any control over.
She looked up into the elements and breathed in the perfume of God’s creation and thanked Him. She listened to the rain speak and the wind interrupt and thanked Him. She purposefully fixed her mind and senses on the reality of God surrounding her, for now and eternity.
Heather lost track of time and was surprised to see the sun trying to sneak through the gray clouds. Kind of like the state of her heart. A lightness and stability infused her being. ‘The peace that passes all understanding…’ kept repeating in her head in a comforting rhythm. She found the relief she needed and the best thing is, she can call out to Him again and again and again. Amen.
