Chelsi circled the fountain for a second time before finally deciding to deposit her nest egg under a large lily pad. She knew she was free at last. She began to skip and then broke into a run as the sun shone radiantly upon her. Her enthusiasm was so contagious that a couple she passed smiled and whispered to one another about an undetermined time in which all Reinsveld would be independent too. A chorus of bees caught Chelsi’s attention and without missing a step she continued through the swarm waving her arms and laughing as several of them bounced off her body. It wasn’t until she reached an open field with unforgiving foliage that her pace was slowed and ultimately halted. She discovered some blood in her hair as she untangled several broken twigs from her silky, auburn ponytail. She wondered about its source for a moment and then set out to investigate.
Chelsi knew much of Reinsveld’s topography like the backs of her hands to the soles of her feet. The blood was fairly dry so wherever it came from was probably before she burst through the bees with her body and possibly even before she placed her life savings under the large lily pad. She was beginning to have second thoughts about her decision.
“This is a big world that sometimes doesn’t really afford a girl the degree of clarity she would like,” she thought. She then wondered why her parents named her Chelsi.
“If they would only have given me the same name as my friend Vivien,” she pouted. Forcing a smile, she made her way back to the fountain. The croaking sounds were by now almost unbearable since it was nearly evening. Chelsi’s scream silenced them, however, as she lifted her blouse to get out a bee.
“Now I can at least think,” she thought. She was really starting to want her money back but knew it would be quite impossible to recover it since all Reinsveld was now well into twilight. She was feeling neither free nor warm. Chelsi looked for a good spot to sit down and chose a place beside two lovers kissing. She began to sniffle.
“What’s wrong?,” asked one of the lovers.
“I put all my money under a large lily pad, I have dried blood and sticks in my hair, and now I have a bee sting on my stomach,” thought Chelsi. She didn’t say this though because she saw they had resumed kissing.
