He grinned from ear to ear as he listened to the preacher preach his sermon.
The preacher was preaching about passports. He asked the question, "Do you have your passport to heaven?" " Is it real or is it fake?"
Mr. Henry got to thinking, He reached into his back pocket and pulled out his wallet.
He unfolded a paper that was worn thin, for it had been there for twenty years. It was a
certificate he had received from the pastor. It said, that Jim Henry had made a
public confession to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior, and that he was baptized on
June 14th, 1952. He thought to himself with a proud attitude," I have my passport right
here in my pocket." He said, softly. He then folded the certificate back up,
and stuck it back into his wallet.
The truth be told, Mr. Henry, only walked the isle that day to take the preacher 's
hand, because his Granny was sitting right there next to him. When the preacher gave
an invitation for salvation, Granny nudged him in the ribs and said,
"Boy you get on up there now, if you want any supper tonight," " Yes, Granny,"he
slinked up to the preacher. The words he said to the preacher were so mumbled that
the preacher could not really tell what the young man was saying. He said, "Son, do
you believe that Jesus Christ will save you?"
"I reckon," the young man said.
Over the next twenty years, Mr. Henry continued to attend church, sitting there every
Sunday with a grin from ear to ear. It was all public show, everything in his life was
totally opposite of what he had potrayed to his church family.
He had been keeping secrets, This Mr. Henry had them all fooled, but he did not have
Mr. Henry thought his life was pretty good, after all, he had plenty of money, and never worked a lick in his life. He was married to a beautiful woman, and had three fancy
cars. His house was nothing to sneer at either. Why, he was the talk of the town, the
perfect model citizen. He served as a deacon in his church and never missed a Sunday.
Life was just grand for Mr. Henry, so he thought.
Mr. Henry, was on cloud nine. H e had just left from his mistresses house down the road.
"I feel so good today, I think that I will drive over to the next town and visit my favorite bar. Nobody will see me there," he was thinking out loud.
Mr. Henry was thinking about the sermon he heard the preacher preach just this past Sunday," Is your passport fake?"
the words echoed in his head. Then he thought about his paper that he had safely tucked away in his wallet," I got my passport and it's the real thing. It was signed by the preacher so that made it legal." He said," I got my passport to heaven thanks to you preacher."
Mr. Henry, had it all wrong, you can't get to heaven just because you shake the preacher's hand, you have to mean it in your heart. It takes a real heart felt commitment to ask Jesus Christ to be your Lord and Savior, not just words that you mumble, because you want to impress those around you.
Lip service and good deeds won' t save you. Belonging to a church won't save you. Mr. Henry, was so deceived.
Mr. Henry, was almost to his favorite bar, the thought's of mingling with some of the ladies was racing through his head, he was grinning from ear to ear.
Suddenly, there was an unfamiliar pain in the center of his chest, one last gasp of air, and Mr. Henry died.
"Do you have your passport to heaven?" " Is it real or is it fake?" The preacher asked.
