TITLE: A Missionary's Dream
By Judy Meyers

Nancy and Judy sat in the booth at the local Denny’s Restaurant. Nancy had invited her pastor’s wife to go to lunch. Nancy was full of excitement. She had just been asked to be the director of the women’s ministries of the church and wanted some leadership advice from Judy.

“I have a lot of ideas. But, I want each meeting to be something that the ladies will talk about,” Nancy told Judy.

“That is a wonderful goal, Nancy.” Judy added. “Women need something that will challenge them to be creative in their daily lives.”

“What I long for, “ Nancy continued, “is a way to expand my horizons. Jeff and I have longed to do some missionary work.”

“Really? Where do you desire to go?”

“Well,” Nancy started, “Jeff received Jesus through a woman from India. He has always wanted to give back to the people of India because of that lady.”

“You want to go to India?” Judy asked.

Judy was a little surprised at Nancy’s desire to travel to India. Knowing the conditions of the country and how poor the people were. It was a shock that Nancy would want to spend any time in that country. Nancy and her husband Jeff were people that never looked like they had a messy day. Nancy’s hair, makeup, and clothes were always perfect. Jeff was the same type. Together, they looked like Barbie and Ken dolls. Judy just couldn’t see them in India.

Setting aside the perfection of the couple, they were very well schooled in ministry. Both had been to Bible school. Jeff taught a Bible class at the church’s Sunday School. Nancy had regular Bible studies in her home and was well adept in ministering to women. The thought of Jeff and Nancy going on a mission trip was not out of the question. The question was where they should go.

The girls finished their lunch and Nancy drove Judy back to the parsonage. While they were in the driveway, Judy mentioned the idea of India again. “I’ll tell my husband about what you said. You never know, something might come up.”

When Judy told her husband about her luncheon with Nancy, he said, “I just received an invitation from India, today. They want us to come for a meeting there.”

As the couple talked, they felt an urgency that Jeff and Nancy should be allowed to take the invitation and fulfill their heart’s dream. Within weeks, the couple had their airline tickets and plans were made for their three week journey into several villages of India. They could hardly wait.

The weeks passed quickly. Jeff and Nancy made their missionary trip and came home with tremendous testimonies of life-changing situations. The experience had been a dream come true. They wanted to return as soon as possible.

Once again, Judy had been invited to lunch with Nancy. Across the table, Nancy’s eyes watered. “I loved being in India. I have such a longing in my heart to get my hands dirty again. I can’t explain it. I love those people and want to go back.”

Within two years, Jeff and Nancy were able to return to India where Nancy was able to assist in a hospital and help deliver babies. The couple has always remembered how God opened the door for them to fulfill their dream of missionary work in India. Who but God could put such a combination together? When He gives the desire, He also opens the door."

It's heartwarming to read about people who respond so enthusiastically to God's call.

Writing suggestion: think about using more pronouns, and combining some of your short sentences into longer, more complex ones.

I like the "Ken and Barbie" bit--amusing!

Being a missionary in India is not a walk in the park. A good friend of mine was there with a team last year, and they came accross such opposition that they were forced to leave the country. It was her second time there.
Good work.

Nice contrasts between Nancy's and Judy's thoughts of India. :)
