Freedom Of, Not From

Unusual their request seemed to be
To a king who ruled by tyranny
Leave safe England for the unknown
Their homeland to forever disown

Colonists left to have religious freedom
They meant freedom of, not freedom from

So they set out becoming Pilgrims
A rough journey and future grim
From the thirteen, people moved west
Forgetting, it seems their original quest

Colonists left to have religious freedom
They meant freedom of, not freedom from

Much has changed in 232 years
A country united by new fears
Schoolchildren are no longer led in prayer
While an atheist sues over inaugural prayer

Colonists left to have religious freedom
They meant freedom of, not freedom from

Shopping centers are now open on Sunday
Schools have had their Bibles taken away
United States of America now divided
Our country has become so misguided

Colonists left to have religious freedom
They meant freedom of, not from

Very good use of repetition throughout the poem and in the title. Good job.

Small words can make such a big difference & I like the repetition too.

Your concern for our country is well-expressed in this thoughtful poem. I like the phrase, "freedom of, not from"--it says a lot!
