I stood my watch till break of dawn,
thinking of family and home,
Alert and vigilant I kept my watch,
yet my heart within me groaned.
I thought of Christmas days of yore,
the presents under the tree,
the smells of my Momma's cooking,
and what that meant to me.
O' God I want to be back home,
and feel that Christmas cheer,
but I'm a soldier, and duty calls,
So maybe Lord, next year.
O' please my God, keep them safe,
the ones I hold so dear,
I ask you nothing for myself,
Cept' Christmas home next year.
Just then a flash from tracer shells, whizzed righ past my head,
Bombs exploded so close to me,
I thought that I was dead.
I envisioned Momma reading the letter,
Your son was killed today,
I shook it off and returned the fire,
and I began to pray.
Lord if I fall, just let them know,
I stood my watch for them,
Christmas next year will have to wait,
till in Heaven, we meet again.
with all my love, your Son
