The sermon comes to an end and the pastor walks from behind the pulpit. The lights dim slowly and the pianist begins a song. Pastor takes a candle from his pocket and lights it from one of the candles on the altar. He raises it towards heaven and then lights the candle of each the associate pastors’ candles. They in turn walk to the first pew on either side of the aisle and pass the glow to the next person.

The lights continue to dim as “Silent Night” plays softly in the background and the people gathered sing the familiar words. Soon the church is lit from within by nothing other than the glowing candles. What an amazing and inspiring sight! It reminds us once again of the birth of our Savior who brought His light to our world.

Each Christmas Eve my family shares this tradition with so many others in our church and community. It never ceases to create a sense of peace in my heart, mind, and soul as I participate in this miraculous service and experience the glow of the candles. My spirit always seems a bit brighter as I leave, still marveling in the glow that surrounded me and my loved ones.
