About seven feet tall, no less than three and a half to four feet across the center…It mustn’t be a perfect upside down cone, it must possess SOME character. It must be a fresh Douglas fir. The branches cut from the bottom, must be kept to use on the hearth in some arrangement with a candle and the miniature white nativity figures. On the tree itself, simple white lights,…small, and basic gold, silver, red or green ornaments. There must be that beautiful cloth, sculpted angel figure at the top, with one light at its base, illuminating the angel from below. Underneath the tree, the cloth to cover the stand, and then that cotton wrapping material stuff to lay over it, as a blanket of snow. The small buildings and figurines dispersed like a small town with the train set encircling the whole tree.
There can never be an artificial tree there, NEVER….if you can’t get one I will…without that smell, it’s just not Christmas. Fire in the fireplace, snow on the ground outside, the tree all lit-up; OLD Christmas music in the background; Andy Williams, Perry Como, Bing Crosby,….you get the picture. The only thing interrupting the aroma of that beautiful tree is the baking of that wonderful feast for THE DAY. The only sound that crowds out the crackling of the fire from time to time, the intermittent banter and laughter coming from that kitchen. Candles, lights, family, friends, and, of course, football.
…….In a few days its all over,…in a few months you may even forget what you got for Christmas. Before you know it, everyone has left, and you will too, first thing in the morning. Awesome but brief, this time we have each year; this time we have to enjoy and love one another…….And during all of this hustle and bustle, eating and indulging, …. How much time do we give the birthday boy….really?….
