We called it the “humming bridge”. It was a stretch of iron rods across the Kansas River near my childhood home designed so the snow and ice would fall right through to the water below. The bridge had no blacktop surface only the expanse of iron rods. This strange construction caused a humming sound as cars drove across, thus the nickname.
Some people were afraid of the “humming bridge”. One woman I knew even drove out of her way taking a different route whenever she needed to go into the city from our small town on the other side of the river.
A few years ago I found a similar bridge near where I live in Ohio. One afternoon I crossed it with my husband whow is blind. The sudden change of sound unnerved him. He thought we were going into a skid, and I had to reassure him it was just the natural sound of the wheels going over a “humming bridge”. Now whenever I drive that way I give him a warning.
Because of the fruit in the Garden of Eden there is a massive impassible gulf between each of us and God. On our own we could never get across. But, God who is rich in love and mercy built a bridge. If we don’t like the bridge there is no other way across no matter how hard we try to find another route.
Jesus is the only way to the Father.
