Mom was pleased to receive her invitation to the dance. My husband and I bought her a lovely yellow dress. “It’s almost time for the dance Mom. I can help you get ready.” Gently, I shaved the stray hairs from my mother’s chin that seem to come with age. Other than that she needed no makeup on her porcelain-like skin just a swipe of lipstick to enhance her smile.
I left for the store expecting her to be gone to the dance when I returned. She didn’t say so but I sensed she wanted to meet her escort alone. I was a little surprised to see her when I returned. She expressed no disappointment at the apparent postponement as we visited a while before bedtime.
The next morning I awoke to find that sometime in the night my mother had snuck off to the dance.
I’m looking at her now, so beautiful in her yellow dress. Friends and family wipe away tears as I share this story of the last day with my mother. Then I play her favorite song, I Can Only Imagine by Mercy Me and I think of her dancing with Jesus in her yellow dress. She had chosen yellow because, “It is the color of light and Jesus is the light of Heaven” she’d said.
