What is a mother? I guess the answer to that question would be whether you had a good mother or not. Children whose mothers shove them out the door telling them not to bother her cannot expect children to truly love and respect them. To me mothers like that are the worse kinds of human being possible. How sad when their children shut them out of their lives and they cry, complain and don’t have a clue as to why their children don’t love them. I have seen mothers like that.

My mother was fantabulous. She was the best mother any child could have. She set up nights holding me when I was sick and giving me her undivided attention. She did not raise us to be disrespectful. She did believe in discipline. We knew better not to sass her. We got our butts paddled and corrected if we did wrong. All my mother had to do when we were older was to threaten corporal punishment and we were like angels. We knew just how far we could push mom before she gave us a whack. Did we push the envelope? My brothers and I pushed the envelope so many times. It is a wonder we didn’t drive mom over the edge. My mother was loving, kind, considerate compassionate, forgiving and gentle.

As I grew older,my mother also became more than a mother. She became my best friend. I could talk to her about anything and the two of us laughed, cut up and truly enjoyed each other’s company. My prayer or wish is for all children to have a mother like mine. She went home to the Lord in 1991 and there is not a day goes by that I don’t miss her.

The following is a poem I wrote for my mother.

“What is a Mother?”

What is a mother?
Lord, please help me explain
the meaning behind the word mother and
how beautiful that word is to proclaim.

Help me to tell of her special kind of love---sent to us from above.
It is a love that truly covers all starting when we were small.

She was always at our beck and call.
She picked us up when we’d fall.
She dried our eyes and wiped our nose and with her gentle, tender love watched us grow.

She disciplined and taught us the
things in life we’d need;
the beauty of birds on wing she
gently taught us of such wondrous things.

As we grew, she taught us how not to be afraid.
She taught us how to love our brethren
and not judge by the color of skin.
She lovingly taught us so many things.
When we were grown, she taught us how
to spread our tiny wings.
She taught us to soar with eagles on high,to set our dreams and reach for the sky.

What is a mother?
Lord, let me forever proclaim.
The beauty, patience and love of a godly mother, because my Lord she is like no other.

Thanks for this moving entry! The first line of your second paragraph is great; I'd suggest that you start with that--your introductory paragraph is slightly weaker, and the "fantabulous" one is where the real hook is.

I loved your last lines to the "What is a mother" So neat! I especially liked the how you summed up the different roles of a mother too. Nicely done! ^_^
