At my age, I am truly blest to have two remaining aunts and I thank God each day that some of my relatives are long lived. My favorite aunt Helen will be eighty-nine her birthday and she truly is a child of God. Her mind is still sharp as a tack and she is a blessing to talk with. She survived the great depression and came out stronger for all the heartache involved. I cannot express the joy that this tiny woman of God has bought me. She is an inspiration to me and it is with gusto that I can tell you about her.
As a child, my family would visit different aunts and uncles on weekends. We would run and play with our cousins and enjoy each other’s company. Family was important to us and we thanked God for it. We didn’t have computer games or video games to occupy our minds. We played games of tag, hide and seek and chased each other around the yard seeing whom the fastest runner was. Life was simple and we enjoyed the slower pace of living.
My other aunt is just ten years older than I am. She will turn seventy-eight in August. My aunts are vastly different. They are like night and day as far as personalities go. One acts as if she is a queen and wants others to cater to her. Aunt Helen is down to earth, kind, considerate and loving. This is one of the mysteries of life. They are sisters but nothing alike. Talking with Aunt Helen is so enjoyable and because of her honesty, she brightens my day.
I know deep within my heart when God calls Helen home she will truly be missed. She reminds me so much of my beloved mother, her older sister, who is with the Lord. My mother and Aunt Helen were not only sisters but also best friends. They could discuss any subject and not offend each other. They called each other everyday just to say hi and let the other know how things were going in their lives.
How sad it is that the best of life has somehow slipped through our fingers. Families today do not relish getting together with aunts, uncles and cousins. They are too busy with their lives and for some the extended family has lost its importance. The older I become I can see the importance of family. I can understand how having a strong church family blesses every aspect of our lives. In I Timothy 5:8 God instructs us about family. It reads as follows; “If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”
In closing, I want to thank God for all of my kin but mostly for Aunt Helen who in all her simplicity is such a blessing. Oh, by the way she still does her own springhouse cleaning and gets a little upset because it takes her longer to get the job done.
