If I'd only been wiser
I might be havin' a square
Instead of beggin': "Sir,
Do you have a dime to spare?"
If I'd just finished school
And put aside my fool schemes
I might be a Somebody
Instead of a Dreamer of dreams.
But I had a good Mother
And a wonderful Dad
So how did it happen
That I turned out so bad?
I was nothing but trouble
From the day I was born
So no wonder my parents
Looked so old and so worn.
I was mildly mischievous
When just a small child
But during my teen years
I went completely wild.
When I became an adult
They still had no rest
For I'd get into trouble
And come back to the nest.
A marriage on the rocks
Or perhaps a lost job
But whatever the crisis
It was my space to sob.
God wouldn't have blamed them
If they'd ever said "No"
But they left the door open
And Why?...I don't know.
"If Only? If Only?"
Is the expression I use
When salvaging my pride
With such a flimsy excuse.
"But Hey, not to worry,
Things are now looking up!
I just got a Chocolate Valentine
In my little tin cup!"
God Bless You, Sir!
(Happy Valentines Day!
