There was a man who stepped forward to read a eulogy
And in the course said everything as gracious words could be
He told of all the many deeds and all the sacrifices
This man was such of integrity without all other vices
As words poured out over congregation memories arose
Here lay a great and awesome man in silent, still repose
How could we know that he’d be gone in the blink of one fine day
Would he know of all that he had done from all the words we’d say
The man at the podium began to shake and let go of a tear
You knew he loved this man a lot and wished to draw him near
But then before all of us this man held up his page and sank
From the pulpit to his seat again the page remained quite blank
This man’s grief was evident of words he’d never spoken
And now found all the words quite right however just a token
Of all the things that might’ve or should or could be said
But now the time had slipped away for now the man lay dead
How precious are the words that are spoken in due season
You may not understand why you speak them or what the reason
If just to lift the heart and help a brother finish his course well
It’s better than words never spoken to encourage someone…do tell
