NARRATOR
Tick, tick, tick, went the large black and white round clock on the classroom wall. It was almost 3:00 pm. on Wednesday afternoon; the school day was almost over. Excitement welled up inside eleven-year-old Tina because every Wednesday afternoon for the last six months meant going to the Good News Club. (The bell rings)
TEACHER, MRS. GUTHRIE
Class dismissed.
NARRATOR
Tina scooped up her books and hurriedly jammed them into her backpack. As Tina was leaving the classroom, her friend Allison ran up to her.
ALLISON
Hi Tina. (Allison said out of breath) Do you want to play on the swings for a while?
TINA
No thanks, not today. I’m going to the Good News Club at Mrs. Peterson’s house.
ALLISON
(Allison rolls her eyes) Oh, come on Tina! Just for a little while! Can’t you skip today?
NARRATOR
Tina looked into Allison’s eyes for a few seconds. Tina has tried to invite Allison to the Good News Club for weeks. Every time Tina asked Allison to come, Allison would have an excuse. Tina knew Allison didn’t know Jesus. Then an idea came to Tina. Now was her chance.
TINA
Hey Allison, I’ll make you a deal. Why don’t you come to Good News Club with me this time. It’ll be a lot of fun. It starts in a few minutes. We sing, there’s a story, and games. Mrs. Peterson gives us cookies and milk at the end. Then afterwards we can go to the playground and swing. How about it? (Tina looks at her friend hopefully.)
ALLISON
I, I guess I can. Let me call my mom first. (Allison pulls from her backpack a cell phone and pushes #1 on the keypad). Hi mom, it’s me. Tina invited me to go to Good News Club with her this afternoon. Is it okay? It’s from 3:20 to 4:30. Great! Can I go to the playground afterwards? I’ll be home around 5:00, okay? Thanks mom, bye. (Allison puts her cell phone in her backpack.)
ALLISON
Mom said it was okay. Let’s go.
NARRATOR
Tina and Allison walk across the street from the school to Mrs. Peterson’s house. Mrs. Peterson is a kindly lady in her early 60’s. She is a widow and has grown children. She has been having Good News Club in her home for almost 10 years. Mrs. Peterson has about 20 kids in her Good News Club. She loves sharing the love of Jesus with children. She meets Allison.
TINA
(Putting her arm around Allison’s shoulder) Mrs. Peterson, this is Allison, my best friend from school.
MRS. PETERSON
Hi Allison. I’m so glad you came (Mrs. Peterson shakes hands with Allison.) (To all the kids) Children! We have a visitor. This is Allison. Now if you all will take a seat, we’ll get started.
NARRATOR
Mrs. Peterson starts off leading the children in the songs, Jesus Loves the Little Children and Children of the Lord. She told the story about Jesus blessing the children. She explains that children are very important to Jesus. Mrs. Peterson included a story about a missionary in Africa who teaches children about the love of Jesus. After the story, Mrs. Peterson gave the children a memory verse to learn. Last, the children play a game about books of the Bible. Finally, refreshments are served. Time to go.
TINA
How did you like Good News Club, Allison?
ALLISON
It was cool. I liked the singing and the story about Jesus and about the missionary. Tina, would you tell me more about Jesus?
TINA
Sure I will. Let’s talk at the playground.
NARRATOR
Tina and Allison race to the playground. Yes, Jesus loves children and adults too. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the Kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it” (Luke 18:16,17.)
