STICK BALL

Didja ever try to tell somebody about Jesus and you just seemed stuck for words? Maybe the time wasn't right or the crowd wasn't right (after all, it was only a street game of stick ball) but something was holding you back. Take heart my friend. It's going to be OK. You wanted to do the right thing for our Lord and Savior but you got stonewalled. You walked away with your tail between your legs and figuered that all was lost.

Let me tell you something. Somebody was watching. Somebody saw that attempt, embarrassing as it was, and it made an impression on him. It may have been the biggest scoffer in the crowd. It may have been someone on the sidelines who didn't have the nerve to do what you did which is to stand up for the Lord. Or (and this thrills me most to say) it may have only been our Lord himself. Sometimes humans don't listen. But that's all right. When you take a stand for Jesus, you always have a divine audience. On that long walk home, you always have a big brother who'll put his arm around you and bust your chops a little.

He'll say things like "Nice try little one, but you're going to have to bone up on your scriptures if you wanna play in the big leagues like me." He knows all about big league ball. Then He'll smile and rub your hair (even those of us who don't have much hair) and He'll dare you to race him home. Once you get home he'll brag on you to our Father. "Hey Abba" he'll say..."Guess what (your name here) did for me today?" And then, He'll tell the story. It always sounds so much better when He tells the story.

Your Father will look at you through soft eyes that glisten with moisture and He'll embrace you in a hug that covers all your faults. Your older Brother will be standing to the side casually whistling a tune and tossing a ball to Himself because He knows that this is your moment. Meanwhile, back on the street is someone that you don't even know that you touched who is coming ever closer.

HOME RUN ladies and gentlemen...that ball is outta here!!

Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation...

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit...

Ball game over...You're an evangelist.
