TITLE: A Tranquil Journey
By christine bastow

The sky was just beginning to lighten toward the east as Kiara made her way along the narrow path, leading to the village of her family.

She had been away at the next village helping her sister after the birth of their second child, and was now returning home.

As much as she liked spending time with her sister, Kiara missed her mother and father so much, that she had decided to set off during the night so as to be home by morning.
She also secretly loved to walk in the early hours, as it gave her quiet time with her heavenly Father, and the peacefulness of this special walk gave her a new sense of vitality.
A light breeze whispered a hush, as her feet padded silently and her skirt swished gently on this crisp morning.

Pulling her wrap tighter around her shoulders Kiara moved ahead with confidence and was full of excitement of the journey ahead.
A night animal scurried through the scrub not far away, while birds of the night moved through the early morning sky to find a place of rest.

The brook that followed the path she was on, gurgled and babbled while it twisted and turned moving over stones and rocks along its way.
Stopping to fill her water container Kiara watched the last star disappear as the night began to fade.

It had been weeks since she had walked this way and the earthy smells made her body tingle with joy.
Confident of her destination, Kiara moved swiftly and ever so lightly so as not to startle the sleeping animals.
Every now and then a branch would touch her smooth skin and the dew on the leaves would delightfully drop, causing an amazing burst of freshness and therefore a bounce to her step.

Coming to the edge of the forest, the path slowly began to rise leaving the trees and brook behind.
Kiara worked her way up higher and higher, knowing that she was about to enter her very own sanctuary.
Stopping at the top of a cliff which overlooked a beautiful mountain lake, Kiara sat and rested while watching the dawn arrive just as she had planned.

Mist over the water twisted and twirled as it lifted heaven bound disappearing into the sunlight.
The colors were so beautiful with bursts of pinks and oranges and clouds that were fluffy and golden.
It was like a masterpiece given, just for her eyes from the creator of the universe.
Kiara lifted her head and with tears of joy thanked God for the day ahead.

Then eating the small supply of food she had packed the night before and quenching her thirst with some of the water collected earlier, Kiara settled and allowed the serenity of the moment to captivate her.

Leaning against a small tree, Kiara relaxed on the small blanket she had brought along, when calmness like soft snowflakes fell over her and a still small voice whispered “be still and know that I am God.”
Then listening intently, He spoke secrets to Kiara only for her heart to understand, speaking words of comfort, encouragement and life.
It seemed like hours that she had sat there listening to these inspirational words, and yet it was only moments.

Then the stillness was gone as the birds and animals awakened to let the world know it was daybreak.
Flocks of birds moved across the sky, self-assured of the destination they were going, and the exhilarating sound reminded Kiara that it was time for her to leave this tranquil place and walk the last part of her journey.

I shared in Kiara's tranquility. You've painted vivid pictures, and the words you chose matched the setting. Speaking to God amongst such beauty must have been transforming ... and she knew where to go. Excellent.

Just the descriptive tone is enough to make this a good piece. Good work.
