“…Take heed to yourselves; for they shall deliver you up to the councils…But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost” Mark 13:9a and 11 (KJV)

When young I thought I knew everything. Oh, and I was bold too. Now as a Grandfather I can look back on this time with a chuckle. Occasionally I’m reminded of an incident many years ago which made a big impact on my Christian life. It had to do with a snake.

While going to a secular university, I lived in a dorm for a year. Several of us young guys would go to a women’s dining room to have our meals with some good looking gals we were trying to impress. I talked to several about Christian matters but did not realize how much of an impression I was making on them. One day we were discussing, actually arguing, evolution versus creation when a woman sarcastically asked, “If evolution is wrong and creation is right, then why on the skeleton of a snake there are small appendages where arms and legs are evolving?” Immediately I replied, “Not so!” Stunned, I thought, What did I say? I have no idea what to say now. I need to be quiet and listen to what God says. There was a feeling of complete emptiness inside.

It was my voice but He spoke, “Remember in the Garden of Eden what God told the serpent which had deceived Adam and Eve into eating the forbidden fruit? ‘Upon thy belly shalt thou go and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life’ (Gen 3:14b). It is NOT where arms and legs are going to grow through evolution but where they had been and they’re a testimony to you and me of what happened in that Garden so long ago.”

The women were not the only ones to learn a lesson that day. I learned I didn’t know everything but the Holy Spirit does. I have that episode as a reminder if I should ever be brought before “the council” and let He will speak the proper words through me.

I’m still bold, but in a different way now. For I know God can be a witness of Himself even through the skeleton of a snake.

Cool! I love the explanation, and it's so very logical, of course. I enjoyed reading this and you make an excellent point about trusting God to give us the right words when needed. Good devotional!

The style of this story put me, the reader, in touch with you, the writer. It felt like a friendly conversation. I also love what the Holy Spirit did in speaking for you. Thanks for sharing a story and a revelation about the snake - it is one I had never heard before.
