Labor pains and medicine -
now’s the time to push again!
Forgotten is the suffering
when tiny lungs begin to sing.
Diapers, baby clothes and toys;
sleepless nights and daily joys.
The future holds no guarantee,
but mothers we will always be.
Up and down, this way and that,
climbing higher, falling flat.
Toddlers’ curiosity,
ever something new to see.
Kissing boo-boos here and there,
hugs and tears and smiles we share.
Seasons change and so do we,
but mothers we will always be.
Off to school, now don’t be late;
look what I made; it’s so great!
Baseball, soccer, ballet dance;
does this shirt go with these pants?
Field trip money due today;
have you thrown that book away?
We can’t watch them constantly,
but mothers we will always be.
Mom, can I please have the car?
I really need a new guitar.
Hey, that curfew isn’t fair,
and what’s so bad about my hair?
Youth group’s going out of town,
unveil the graduation gown.
Most times we just can’t agree,
but mothers we will always be.
Finally flown out of the nest,
pick the college that’s the best.
Marriage, what, so suddenly?
They’ll be happy, wait and see.
Can’t believe they’re grown and then
the cycle has begun again.
They now have their own family,
but mothers we will always be.
