“M-Michael, N-no,” hiccupped the little angel. “You can’t be serious. He’s not! Is He?”
“Yes, little one, He is.” The archangel spoke in a reverent tone but carefully so his little protégé could understand.
“B-b-but, He can’t!” The little one walked in circles in front of his mentor, clearly agitated.
“Yes, He can,” Michael replied. “He loves them you see.”
“But they don’t deserve His love.” The little angel scowled and shook his fist. “In fact, it would serve them right if He flooded the whole place again just like He did when Noah was alive. Boy,” he chuckled, “Do you remember the look on all their faces when it started to rain. They couldn’t believe that, after all that time, Noah was right.”
“Yes, well, this time, He’s going to use a different method to get their attention. He loves those frail humans so much that He plans to keep His promise. You know, the one about never covering the whole earth with a flood again. Anyway, He is the boss and what He says, goes. Don’t you agree?”
“O-oh of c-course. B-but…”
“No buts. Now let’s get ready for His departure.” The two angels, with Michael in the lead, continued to move towards the gates guarding the heavenly city from interlopers. A great crowd had gathered in preparation for the heavenly choir to announce His arrival on earth. They planned to herald His decent with loud trumpets, too.
The angels watched as He approached the gates. They bowed low, touching the ground with their foreheads in reverence of His Majesty, the Lord of Lords and King of Kings. His face glowed with love for the people He planned to save.
“He’s going as a baby, you know,” one angel whispered to another near the place where the littlest angel bowed beside Michael.
“H-he is?” squeaked the tiny voice. “H-he can’t do that!”
“Little one, we’ve already been over that. He can do whatever He wants. He’s the boss.” Michael was growing impatient.
“B-but why a baby? Won’t He be in danger? After all…”
“Do you really think that He can’t handle a little danger from the very humans He created?” Michael and the angels nearby chuckled, albeit under their breaths. “He wants to live among them, experiencing their temptations and trials so that He can be an example for them to follow. He also wants to show them, not just tell them, how to live.”
“B-but when He sits on their throne, won’t they….”
“He isn’t going to sit on any throne down there. At least not yet. He’s going to die on a wooden cross!”
“W-w-what!” The little angel almost shouted. He couldn’t believe what He was hearing. “They’re going to kill Him?”
“No, little one,” Michael said in as soothing a tone as He could and still whisper. “He’s going to go willingly to the cross…to pay for their sins, you know.”
“B-but...” The little angel had tears in his eyes. His nose started to run and he sniffed.
“There He goes,” said another angel nearby as trumpets sounded all around them. “Okay, let’s sing…” All the angels stood in reverence, shouting His praises for all the earth to hear.
Below, some shepherds heard the heavenly choir and cowered in fear until Michael, the ever-present voice of calm, spoke to them telling of the miracle about to happen. They dropped their shepherd’s staff and ran towards the bright star that had settled over the nearby town of Bethlehem.
“It’s hard for me to imagine or to understand that kind of love,” said the little angel as they watched the drama unfold below them.
“It’s even harder for them,” said an older angel standing beside him with a walking stick in his hand. “But many of them will accept His love and thousands of years from now, their descendents will continue to tell others using music, the written word, and any number of creative ways. His love will be the bridge to their heavenly Father’s side that will bring them into this eternal city, just like all the people you see here already.”
“Glory be to God.” The heavenly voices blended as one in awe and worship.
