A Withered State of Spirituality

“Start off slowly, Bob,” Pastor Ken spoke softly as he eyed the tubes and wires connecting his brother to the monitors. “You need to build up your strength, but you’ve got to take it easy. That was some pretty serious surgery you had and it’s going to take a while before you’ll be feeling like your old self again.” “How could this happen”? asked Bob. “You know how I worked out all these years. I’m strong as an ox compared to most guys my age.”

“Sure Bob, you’re pretty well built but, the rest of your lifestyle is what brought on the attack” replied Ken. “Your lack of paying attention to your diet is what lead to the clot. It’s not always what we do that causes problems. Sometime it’s the things we forget to do or ignore.” “I thought I had things pretty well under control but here I am, stitches and all,” replied Bob.

“You know,” spoke Ken, resuming his Pastoral mode. “Sometimes God lets us think we’re in control. When things are going well we often overlook or omit God, just like you did with your diet. That’s how you ended up in this condition.” “I thought I was a goner when it happened,” exclaimed Bob. “I was as much in shock that it was happening, as I was in pain.” “ No matter how bad things get, in the end, God is always in control,” replied Ken. “On the outside you looked like a muscle builder but, your insides weren’t as picturesque.”

“What about your spiritual fitness, Bob”? asked Ken. “You’re in church every week and you sing in the choir but, how are you doing on the inside”? “You know Ken, I’ve been feeling like God has faded somewhere deep within me. He doesn’t feel as real as He did before,” answered Bob, “but I sure did yell, Jesus, when I was having that heart attack.” “Have you been ignoring Him, like you were ignoring your diet”? Ken questioned.

“To be honest brother you probably hit the nail on the head,” answered Bob. “I seem to have lost my joy in the Lord lately. I feel kind of emotionally exhausted and just plain down all the time. I even feel that way when we’re singing and I’ve never felt like that before. What do you think I should do Ken”?

“Start off slowly, Bob,” Ken answered his brother. “Relief is just a prayer away, tell it to your Father. He knows your situation, but He probably wants to hear it from you. Then begin your spiritual exercise program. Get back in The Word, spend time in prayer, and acknowledge His presence throughout your day. After all Bob, spiritually, as well as physically, you are what you eat.”

This is a good commentary on why it is important to stay in the Word of God. It is a disciplinary action on our parts; and by participating, it keeps us fit. You did a good job of writing. I would have found it a little easier to read if the quotes had been separated into their own paragraphs.

Great illustration of the importance of every aspect of our health -- both physical and spiritually.

I agree that the dialogue needs to be divided. Each new speaker should be a new pharagraph.

I really liked how the pastor/brother's advise for spiritual fitness program was the same as the physical fitness program. Clever.

Good pov. We're often surprised when our spiritual or natural lifestyle catches up with us.

A good concept on how we can ignore God the same as we ignore fitness. I would separate your dialogue. Look at a book that has a conversation between two people. That helps me. Keep writing.
