I Was There

The wind whipped across my face with a fury I will never forget. My hands and feet were beginning to get numb as I stood overlooking the valley below. I was riveted to that spot staring at the beautiful view. The city lights, radiant through the blowing snow, hypnotized me. They reminded me of the train display that grand-pa used to set up at Christmas when I was a child. I would stare at it for hours.

People, barely visible from this position, were scurrying about performing their duties. Then through the moaning wind I heard it; the tolling of the church bells from a far distant steeple. I abruptly snapped out of my trance realizing that it was God who painted this beautiful scene before me. I thought of how Jesus Christ was born amongst us under conditions similar to tonight. I remembered that He is the reason we celebrate this time of year. I am reminded of how much God loved the world and that He sent His Son to suffer, die, and rise again, to pay for our sins and redeem us.

Suddenly the cold and wind were the furthest things from my mind. Thoughts of scripture flooded my soul. “For God so loved the world, believe with thy heart and confess with thy mouth, believe and be baptized, and you shall be saved.” I immediately stopped to pray. Thanking the Lord for the beautiful sight before me. Grateful for the childhood memories He brought to my mind, I smiled within. Praising Him for the Great Salvation He provided for me through His Son Jesus. Nothing could equal the joy I felt, except that moment when I see my Savior face to face.

I suddenly awoke with the help of my black Lab, Sam, licking my toes. It was time to take him out before bed. I placed the book I’d been reading, before dozing off, on the table beside my recliner. Sam and I headed outside. I smiled remembering, with great pleasure, the journey from which I had just returned. It’s marvelous were you can visit in the pages of a book.

I know what you mean about being "there" when you read a good book. The words have the power to transport us and I appreciate the way your story brought this out. Nice work

Awesome opening line and the rest delivers just as nicely. Loved it!

Great title!

A few sentence fragments make for a slightly choppy read, but this is a good piece, meaningful and true.

Loved it! Beautiful setting, beautiful thoughts, and a sermon without being a sermon...if you know what I mean? Touches the soul! I know you hated that last "h" left out of "where"....but things happen. Great job! Kudos!

After reading your article "Daddy's Home" and now this one, we are obviously dogs lovers (my favorite dog of all time is named "Sam").

Well written, flows well with easy transitions.

God bless and keep writing.
