It has been said, "To have a friend you must be a friend." But just what is a friend? According to the Bible, "A friend sticks closer than brother." Someone else states that "A true friend is someone who knows the song in your heart and can sing it back to you when you have forgotten the words." They go by many names: friend, chum, pal, kindred spirit, buddy, comrade. A friend may be your sister or brother, or one of your parents, someone you?ve known since preschool or for only a few weeks. Some of us have many and some just one or two. Despite all these differences that make each one unique, there can be found a common thread that binds together all the explanations and ideals of friendship - loyalty and a love for the other person, a desire to see their needs, and yes, even their wants, fulfilled above one?s own. This genuine concern for one another is what pulls friends through conflicts, quarrels, and crises, and allows them to rejoice with and for one another. Such a friendship is a priceless gem to be treasured and protected forever. How can a miracle be defined? No one friendship is the same as another, therefore no amount of words could interpret just what it is. Each is defined in its own way, in its own time. It is a quality of the human heart to recognize the beauty of a true friend and the value of a wonderful friendship, without explanation.
