The older I get, the more I am learning to value the arts. I listen to the violinist produce heavenly music and watch him play with such abandon and passion, that it makes me happy deep down in my soul. I watch the musicians worship God through their music, and I am moved to tears as I witness these artists doing what God clearly put them on earth to do. You can just see it. And it’s beautiful.

God has been showing me lately that He created beauty and art. These things are meant to be a part of life; indeed these things bring enjoyment and pleasure to life. And God uses these pursuits to bring glory to Himself. Increasingly, the arts are being incorporated into worship. Dance and drama, as well as more varied forms of musical expression, are finding their way into Sunday mornings.

It wasn’t always so for me. Growing up, “the arts” were not valued very highly. The artistic interests we exhibited were not ever really encouraged. In fact, they were downright discouraged in our household sometimes. More practical pursuits were more important and our family’s focus was more on getting good grades, good jobs, making money, etc. Now, those are all fine things, and everyone certainly needs to earn a livelihood. But when we focus on these things to the exclusion of others, I think we do ourselves a great disservice. And we miss out on a part of life that God created and meant for us to enjoy. Even the very first verse of the Bible says, “In the beginning God created…” All you have to do is look at one sunset or sunrise and you will realize that God surely must value beauty and art. After all, He opens and closes each of our days with these artistic masterpieces.

Your first paragraph is so true, how music is such a tool for the Lord. I liked the end as well, you just can't beat an awesome sunset. I enjoyed reading this.

You express yourself very well. Your feelings are clear and your reference to a sunset at the end is very fitting. Nicely done!
