The essence of volunteering is a giving. Giving and volunteering; their definitions are synonymous. Maybe not according to Webster or dictionary.com, but when you see the two in action, you see the same results. Countless hours are selflessly rendered at orphanages, nursing homes, and similar institutions where the underprivileged or underloved reside. Why? Do we volunteer simply because it makes us feel good about our situation? Do we do so in order to fulfill our good deeds block on our morality checklist? Many are the reasons that volunteers volunteer and givers give. Giving is at its best and purest form when it is from clean hands and a pure heart. When it is done simply because a person wants to give, this is true giving…this, as a Prophet of God once said, is proof that you have conquered greed. Many people can give, look at the rich who gave in Mark 12:41. Were they true givers? No, they were not. They gave as a show of their wealth, not out of a willing heart and zeal for the house of God. This is where our giving should be greatest, towards the things of the Kingdom. Why can we give 110 % to a job or company that can release us tomorrow with little or no compensation, yet give grudgingly to the God that has given and still gives His very best for us? This attitude of giving must be all encompassing in the life of a Christian. Much emphasis is on the giving of finances (and rightfully so), but it is the attitude behind the dollars that God views as critical. The same principal applies to the giving of your time to the work of the Lord in your local assembly or community. Are you one that shows up only on high profile projects or do you scrub the toilet with the same fervor that you would preach a sermon or lead a song in the choir? Each opportunity must not be viewed simply as another menial task; we must allow God to work in us a heart of pure worship towards Him in all things. This, my fellow faith writers, is true giving, true worship, the true spirit of a volunteer.
