This is a tribute to a friend of mine who is doing amazing Missionary work in Guatemala. Her time there is almost over. But this is also a dedication to all of those who may not go to another country, but are missionaries right where they are, at home, work, school, whereever God has placed them.
God told his disciples-Go and make discples of ALL nations, baptising them in the name of the Father, son, and holy Spirit(Matthew 29:19)
He told this to anyone who would believe in Him. He has a "mission" for each of us, whether we go to another nation, or if we stay right here. I was at a retreat a few weekends ago, and the place where we were staying at had a sign, as you drove away "You are now entering the mission field." The whole world is a mission field! You do not need to go to Africa, or Guatemala to find spiritually poor people! They are right here! These people may be physically wealthy, unlike some people in the underdeveloped nations, but their spiritual state is a mess! The need Jesus! The need hope, and they need love! And who better to share that with them than a compassionate, zealous man or woman of God? We don't need to go through a training course to share Jesus love with others. My friend in Guatemala could never pinpoint one event that has made her time there special. It is a lot of little events that happened, special moments between her and another, where the presence of God shows up, and the person who may not have known God, begins to understand that He does love them, and that there are people in the world who know God, and want to share that love with others.
You can stand before a big crowd and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. Or you can help an old person with their groceries, hug a child, listen to a stranger, send a greeting card, visit a sick person, etc, and THAT too is sharing the love of Jesus, that is being a missionary.
When missionaries go to the countries in need, they don't just talk. They do things, they help. Jesus wasn't all talk. He showed His love in ACTION. And thats what He wants us to do. There is this awesome quote by St. Francis of Asissi-"Preach the gospel. And if necesary, use words." Being a missionary isn't just going to another nation and teaching about Jesus. It is any act of kindness, done in Jesus name!
