A leader either makes or breaks. A good and strong leadership in the church is vitally important. The leadership in the church is called and ordained by God. They have the responsibility to either see the church grow big or remained small. Much of their leadership qualities come from their walk with God. As the leaders walk and obey God, you will see that the church structure is in place, and there is plenty of room for church growth.

A leader in the church is a hand-made of God. He prunes him to the level that He wants him to function in the church. Every role in the church is ordained by God. We function not according to our own will or desire, but according to God’s giftings and talents that He has given to each one of us. As a leader, you must know your calling; what you are called to do and your role in the church. People drop out of their calling, either they disobeyed God or they are in the wrong positioning in the church.

A leader is made up of people who are pruned and groomed by God. He goes through the process of sanctification and dying to self. All his talents meant nothing if he operates according to his own will and desire, rather than from God, who directs and activates his call. He must be willing to subject to God’s dealing in his life, in the area of submission to God first before he can submit to men. In another word, he has no agenda then to obey God.

Obedience is so important in serving God. We see in the Old Testament, King Saul disobeyed God and lost his kingship. There are two occasions where he disobeyed God. First, he offered the burnt offering to God, which was not lawful for a king to do so, as it was meant for the priest. He waited seven days for the Prophet Samuel to come, but took things into in own hand when he saw that the people were scattered from him and the Philistines were gathered together at Michmash. 1 Samuel 13:8-12. Fear drove him to take things into his own hand, and that caused him his kingdom.

In another occasion, we see that Saul spared the life of Agag, the King of Amalek, and also the sheep and oxen, which God said were to be utterly destroyed when Saul’s army attacked the Amalekites. God said through Samuel that Saul was to totally destroy all the Amalekites. 1 Samuel 15:1-3, 7-24. This very act of disobedient saw God rejecting Saul as King. 1 Samuel 15:26.

We also see in Moses life, that an act of disobedient caused him from going to the Promised Land. In Numbers 20:7-12, we see that God spoke to Moses that he was to speak to the rock and water will come out from the rock for the people of Israel who was in the wilderness. We see in verse 11 that Moses lifted his hand and struck the rock twice with his rod and water gushed out abundantly. However, in verse 12, the Lord said to Moses that because he disobeyed Him, he would not bring the assembly of the Israelites to the land that He has given to them.

Yes, disobedient towards God can cause us everything, even our inheritance. Therefore as a leader we must always give heed to God’s voice and obey Him unconditionally. The reason why so many leaders have fallen is because of disobedient or pride. If the leader’s character is not dealt with before they serve as leaders, adverse circumstances can happen if he did not go through the process of sanctification and purging from the Lord. The responsibility as a leader is so great that he cannot afford to miss the mark in disobedient.

However, we see in King David, that although he sinned against God by having an affair with Bathsheba and killing her husband, yet God forgave him because of his repentance. 2 Samuel 12:13. King Saul did not repent when the Prophet Samuel confronted him, therefore he suffered the consequences of his sins.

A leader can turn around to serve God yet once again if like David, he repents. God wants His leaders to turn to Him no matter what gross sins they have committed. He is ready to forgive and restore them back to their office if they will only turn and say, “I am sorry”.

Thank you for posting this thought-provoking article. You have sited some good OT examples of leadership both good and bad. I am so glad that God is able and willing to use us sinners to accomplish his purposes. It would be neat to see this theme expanded to include New Testament leaders such as Peter and Paul. Nice work.

Personally, I liked the fact you stuck to the Old Testament. Sometimes I read writings that just try to cover too much. Plus I think the Old Testment leaders faced such human obstacles that I can always relate to them better! Interesting writing here
