John 7:38 (NIV) Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him."
It gets very hot here in Florida, USA, especially in the summer time. This year seems to be the worst I can remember with temperatures hovering around 100 degrees with humidity about the same. Wouldn’t you know that, at the ripe old age of nearly seventy years, I am the sole proprietor of a lawn maintenance business. Whatever gets done, I do myself.
This past week, I was working at our church cleaning a huge parking lot with a blower. I could feel the heat permeate my shoes and the wind of the blower causing heat to buffet my face. The site of a boy from the school using a hose to water some shrubs created urges in me that were almost overwhelming. “How fun it would be to goad that boy into a water fight,” I thought. “How refreshing it would be to feel the water cooling my body.”
Discretion overruled my urges, however. His teachers might have secretly enjoyed seeing him drenched to the skin, especially if he created problems for them that day. Nevertheless, sending a boy home in such a condition would have created a volatile public relations problem.
The heat of summer is not the only hot spots in life these days. Good qualities such as love, kindness, goodness etc, are being scorched to the point of becoming incinerated. Can you feel the flames of evil attacking your mind and heart? Such an onslaught nearly takes your spiritual breath away, at times.
It will take much more than a mere water fight with a boy to cool things down in the spiritual and mental areas of life. Our only recourse will be to call forth those endless streams of God’s Spirit to shower down upon us. Will we do it? Will Christians ban together and petition the giver of life to shower down his goodness?
God promises that streams of living water will gush forth from us that are sorely needed for others that don’t know him. Like a water fight with a boy in 100 degree heat, the results will be more than just fun. Such a series of events will create joys unspeakable, offering refreshment that the mind of man cannot imagine.
