Let me start by saying that this is a true story and not fiction.

It was around mid July, 2006, that TV Malawi aired a piece on a gentleman by the name Joseph Matiki who claims to be jesus christ.

Now ponder this a little. Malawi is a small landlocked sub Saharan African country with one of the lowest development standards around.
This Matiki dude claimed that he was the chosen one, the one we¡¯ve all been waiting for and his time is coming.
You¡¯d expect that such a fellow wouldn¡¯t even be given the benefit of the doubt by allowing him airtime right?
Well wrong! Apparently dude has got followers and believers.
This mind you is in the city of Blantyre where the more exposed and enlightened are found and yet this guy got people to follow him.

This guy has got three wives and counting and they are all his disciples. He claims to have performed some miracles and exorcised some demons from one of his wives and hence she is a believer now.

Recently though, he got beaten up by some people in one of the townships near the city centre.
It is said that people had gathered to listen to him preach or talk which ever it is that he does.
Then during his session one of his followers said they should cut someone¡¯s ear off so that he ¡°jesus¡± could place it back in its place.
Well that must have been the last straw because allegedly that¡¯s when people starting beating him and his followers up.
It was actually reported that the police had to come and intervene to prevent the mob from finishing him there and then.

At present this Matiki guy was sent back to his village by the police. They said it was a safety measure for fear that in the city he might be killed by protesters.
Churches and Religious councils were of course all enraged by this guy¡¯s outrageous claims but now that he is out of the city, there is some calm.

Personally, I am left amazed at what exactly happed to this Matiki¡¯s soul for him to go over board like that.
Does he really think its okay to play around with image of God like that?
That Jesus died on the cross for our sins, does he care?
Does he think freedom of speech means freedom of using God¡¯s name in vain?

Whatever it is that is inside of him I pray and hope that it is rebuked by the people around him.
I hope people will see through his unholy claims and pray to God for strength and wisdom in dealing with such cases.

I believe that Christianity is a great faith because even when people make a mockery of our savior, he is kind and gracious enough to forgive them as long as they repent and give their lives to him.
After all Jesus carried the cross a very long distance and bled all the way so that he could be hang and all of us including this Matiki guy could have a place at God¡¯s side.
Perhaps it is more a case of understanding the message in the Bible and praying for how best to apply it in our lives.

As for this Matiki fellow, I hope he knows that Jesus is waiting and all he has to do is repent and believe in him and stop trying to impersonate him.
Because if doesn¡¯t then he should brace himself for a day when he will have to actually ¡°carry his own cross¡±.

Fascinating, and your conclusion had exactly the right tone. I love it when I learn something about other cultures. Thank you.

Interesting. It is a shame when people mock God like that. I don't get the "dude" part, though. There was something about the formatting with apostrophes that didn't work out right. (just to let you know)
