“Bearing the Cost”

Will you bear the cost? I sat in stunned silence. I had been going over, in my mind, a line of defense I would use in a meeting I had the following day with my supervisors. It was a result of a course of action I had decided to take in response to a barrage of criticisms I had been receiving from some of my coworkers. Their attacks had been unrelenting and the whole office was getting involved. I heard the still small voice pose the question once again. Will you bear the cost? I thought about what that would mean.
First I would have to surrender my right to defend myself. Believing, I was innocent, that would be hard to do. Then I would have to relinquish my desire to see them punished. Finally, I had to accept the fact that the onslaught might continue if I did not pursue the matter.
Could I do what the Lord was asking of me? I thought about how Jesus would respond had the question been presented to Him. Would He bear the cost? Absolutely! He took up His cross and carried it to the bitter end. Did He not require the same of those who chose to be His disciples?
I went to the meeting as scheduled but had already chosen to pick up my cross and follow Christ. The price I paid pales in comparison to the changes that have taken place in my life as a result of that choice. A choice I would never have been able to make had it not been for Jesus taking up His cross for me.

The concepts of surrendering and relinquishing are very compelling here.

This could be expanded easily, or fictionalized as a very good short story. Some spaces between paragraphs would help, too. I liked this, and wanted to know more about your narrator's dilemma.

Yes, more details on the specifics of the problem would have helped, but this is very well done in any case.
