He smiled at her without answering, thinking that it was about time she smiled again. The last time had been… well, no one really wanted to think about the night her brother died. “Come with me, I want to show you something.” He took her hand and led her to a caved-in section along the valley wall. A small grotto of rock and flowery moss allowed the visitor a secluded view of the overly sized valley. A butterfly fluttered past them as they settled onto a boulder. “Now, look up at the sky, about two o’clock.”
She did so and smiled, amazed at the cross-shaped cloud in the sky. “How did you…?” She let the question hang in the air, marveling at the moist sculpture.
“I saw it the first time I was here and just stared at it for what seemed like hours before I was forced to leave for fear of being flooded out. However, when I came back a week later, it was still here, in the exact same spot.” He looked over at her. “Amazing, isn’t it?”
She looked back down at her hands. “I have to admit, it’s like a slap in the face.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well,” she sighed, and then stopped, not wanting to go on. Finally forcing herself to speak up, she admitted, “ever since Roger was killed, I kind of… was mad at God. How could he have done that? Taking my brother away and leaving me no means of fending for myself, that is. My parents were off on vacation, leaving me all alone and I … I don’t know. I couldn’t see why he was taking someone so young. 19 for crying out loud! He was only 19! Why would God…” She couldn’t finish as tears clogged up her throat.
“We don’t know what God has in store or why he allowed Roger to be killed. I guess when something like this happens we have no choice but to just trust God. After all, he made the earth and all that. He even stopped the earth’s rotation and brought it back to full circle without any complications, so we have to believe that what he does is for the good of all in the long run.”
She looked back up at the sky and frowned. She was still a bit mad at God for taking her only brother, but she could see her friend’s point. A verse came to mind and she mulled over it for a while, and thought more of it that night as she went into bed…
“The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.” (2 Samuel 21:3, KJV)
