Sitting in a cavern of my being; a frumpy
Moth-eaten brown leather bag of neglect,
Putrid muck flowing from its crevices
Deserving of a stinking landfill for all eternity
My Sovereign Lord tells me:
"The soul who sins is the one who will die."*
Surely it is not mine?
The unnecessary hurts turned to anger
Formed wells of bitterness, resentment and turmoil
Unleashed onto others in frenzied attacks
Unintentionally killing the hearts of the kind and gentle
The great Peter urges:
"To abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul."*
How can I go on?
Within deep caverns this soul of mine runs rampant
With unseemly emotions and feelings
That have no good intent unless
Lead by His Spirit I am to have a new heart
My greatest friend Jesus commands me:
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul
and with all your mind."*
Is it possible?
Through His love and my total commitment to Him
A transformation of extraordinary form ensues
The bag now a soft white simple purse of gossamer cloth
A fragrant and pleasing treasure, connecting to a heart eager to do His will
The apostle Paul, reminds me to:
"Finish the race and complete the task……
of testifying to the gospel of God's grace."*
Where are you, Lord?
His Spirit speaks to me and at last
My heart, mind and soul are reunited
To kneel at His feet of grace
And go out into the world for His purposes
Now at last I can say, as Mary did:
"My soul glorifies the Lord
and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour."*
