The familiar street which Lucy Halliday observed, was crammed with eager shoppers, impatiently anxious to catch the first of the January bargains. So determined were these passers by, that they seemed oblivious to the fact that she had remained on the same black park bench, for over an hour. Often Lucy herself had desperately pushed her way through crowds like these, desperate to reach some opulent, half price pair of shoes. Not today however. Today was a last goodbye to this prosperous city.
Everything appeared to have changed, as she gazed thoughtfully through the window of Couture, her favourite shop. Even the mannequins, in their pastel coloured fashions, appeared to sneer at the thought of the dirty faced, ragged orphans which she would give all this up to work with. How life would be different, all those miles away from home!
A glance away, the Metropolis Café thronged with exhausted customers. Lucy considered the many hours laughing over lattes with precious friends. Rachel and Donna would relish in deep discussions about Matthew Colwyn, and how they thought he really did like Lucy. They had seen how he looked at her last Sunday. This would always progress to the topic of wedding cake, white puffy dresses and polka dot bridesmaid gowns. But what of these hopes now? The prospect of the next ten years in the wilderness had surely dashed them!
Lucy let the sound of the terse Belfast accent wash over her, strangely soothing these thoughts away. Very soon this would be replaced by the babble of foreign tongues - unknown and distant to Lucy. ‘Lord, have I chosen the correct pathway?’
As she lowered her head, to stare at the gum spattered pavement, Lucy was suddenly struck by an overwhelming wave of peace.
‘Do not be afraid’ a voice inside reminded. ‘I am with at all times.’
Again the dirty, this time distressed orphan’s faces appeared. They appeared to plead for help and mercy. ‘Lord, send someone now.’
Lucy silently offered a prayer of thanks. ‘How grateful I am for my precious times in this city. Goodbye Belfast. Lord, send me.’
