I awoke to it this Saturday morning.
In Texas, the cool weather takes its time. Mid November and its 85°, at least, that’s how it was Friday.
Not Saturday.
A strong north wind blew in while I slept and brought with it temperatures that dropped into the low 40’s.
I get out of bed, trying not to disturb my wife. Making sure the blanket covers her; I make my way down the hall and look in on my daughter, which always puts a smile on my face. Fourteen already, how is that possible?
In the kitchen, coffee waiting. I fill my favorite cup and carry it to my desk. Just about to sit down for morning devotional, I’m interrupted by the sound of my dog at the back door.
Time for another smile. Our family bought a Basset Hound on the premise that they were loving, gentle, quiet animals. Not this one. The loving part, okay, I’ll buy that, but Sammy is anything but gentle and quiet. Truth be told, he’s a nut! But he’s our nut, and I love him.
After letting him in and giving him a minute to tell me good morning the only way he can (usually takes five minutes for him to make his way to me, then all around the furniture, then all around the rest of the house, then the furniture again, and finally back to me, running at full speed the whole time), I make it back to my desk.
My hands are cold and I take a drink from my coffee cup. It feels good to feel cold.
But how long will the feeling last? Maybe by the end of the week the wind will turn from the south again and the heat and humidity will be back.
Not so with God’s love. It is a love that I can depend on, no matter the climate of my heart. In the heat of the summer, or the cold of the winter, His love is there.
I look over at Sammy, who has made his way to our couch and is now fast asleep. Amazing how fast he can do that; up one minute and down the next. A lot like me, when I think about it. I’m one of those who never stays along the straight line. It’s either all the way to the bottom, or I’m at the top of the highest mountain. Again, not so with my Father’s love. This is a love that is true and faithful. An everlasting love that never wavers, no matter how I may feel at the moment, the love of Christ never leaves me or forsakes me.
Unlike the Texas weather, I can count on His love.
Like clockwork.
