The blackness of the clouds matched the blackness of death that surrounded Golgotha. Those looking on, saw three men hanging, three men battered, and three men dying. To the unknowing, there were not many differences between these three men. According to the facts of the day, they were all criminals and they all deserved to die. They were each at their end, meeting in the most horrifying place.
Meeting at the place that would cost them their lives – the cross. Two of them criminals, one of them a savior. One of the criminals scoffed and the other feared God.
The criminal that scoffed that day demanded that Jesus prove himself. He also insisted that Jesus get him out of his current mess. This criminal didn’t show remorse for his criminal activity, he just wanted out of the pain it was causing him at the moment. Too often I find myself asking for the same thing. “Jesus, I don’t like my pain. I don’t like my circumstances. Get me out of this mess! If you are who you really say you are, why am I hurting?” Unfortunately, I too, have had my moments of scoffing at Jesus.
Like the scoffing criminal, I want to be free from pain at any cost, so I demand, I beg, and I throw a tantrum. But then I look at the criminal who feared God, and I am reminded that I am never too broken to be loved by the savior.
Something about Jesus drew this criminal to want more, even at the end of his life. Jesus was bloodied, battered, and weakened, yet this man saw something that he needed at the very end of himself. “Remember me, Jesus,” cried the criminal. And Jesus responded by telling him “today” – “today you will be with me in paradise.” Can you imagine that scene?
Jesus entering Heaven after years of being away. Jesus joining with all those that just witnessed the horror of what just happened on that cross. Jesus coming home – and he brought a friend with Him to the party. Arm in arm, this nameless criminal walks into glory with the Son of God. Angels singing, prophets cheering and slapping Jesus on the back, and children dancing around clapping and chattering in excitement. This criminal opened his heart to a man that appeared to have nothing to offer, in the most unlikely meeting, and he ended up with what only this one man could give.
When I choose to make my end meet Jesus, I find a savior who is willing to walk arm in arm with me, ready to usher me into all that only He can give.
