It was a cold winter day. Taking a breath was difficult because of the humidity, after all it is Florida and when we get cold weather it is usually wet since we are subtropical. I was having trouble breathing. I did not think twice about it as it was a normal reaction to the change in degrees. I took a nice hot shower in hopes my airways would open from the steam and also warm up my body. I turned on the water and only cold came out. I turned the hot water on full blast, but no deal. I scrimmaged through my head thinking, “did I pay the gas bill?” But I had remembered I did, so wasn’t sure what the problem was. I yelled to my husband to check the gas water heater. Sure enough it was off, not producing any long awaited hot water. While he was off to call the landlord, I got out of the chilly shower and dried off and slipped into my flannel night gown. I decided the best thing to do was go to bed. I lied down and my lungs felt like they deflated and stuck together. It felt like there was an elephant in the room sitting on my chest. I remained there for awhile unable to move. That darn elephant just wouldn’t pick up his big rump and get off my chest. I started to hallucinate. I felt his breath from his long trunk on my cheek. It was as if he was teasing me and bullying me into a fight. I slapped at his trunk to only feel something hairy. I thought my hallucinations from being breathless were getting horrific, then I discovered it was our St. Bernard, Joey, who was on top of me! “Joey, get off me you goofy dog!” He grumbled but slowly rolled over to the other side of the bed. Gosh sharing a bed with a St. Bernard dog was as bad as sharing with an elephant. My hallucinations drifted off with the dog and my breathing returned to normal. Off to dreamland I slipped.
