“Do you mean insignificant, honey? Now wherever did you get such an idea?” her concerned mother asked.
“At school. My friends don’t like hanging out with me anymore. They say I’m too small and ugly. Because I have braces and freckles and big glasses. And I’m short. Sometimes I wish I were dead.”
Mother put the ladle down and held Amy close. “Come darling. You’re just 10 years old and you are already wishing you were dead?”
“Why? Do big people also wish they were dead sometimes?”
“Oh yes. Because life is full of problems one after the other, and we get overwhelmed sometimes. The only way to get through this world safely, dear Amy, is to make Jesus your Friend. He is the only one who makes life worth living.”
“Is this Jesus the same One the pastor talked about last week? The One who created the world?”
“Yes, sweetheart.”
Amy quickly disentangled herself from her mother. “Then I hate him! I don’t want Him to be my friend. Why didn’t he make me look like Stephanie Johnson, or Ashley Cromwell, or… or like Tiffany. Ashley is the prettiest girl in class, and she won’t hang out with me. Because Jesus made me ugly!” After saying this, she run to her room and wouldn’t eat dinner.
Her dad finally said, “Honey, I pray that as you sleep God himself will show you the truth.”
The truth about what, Amy wanted to ask. But instead, she drew her covers tighter and shut her eyes.
It seemed she had not slept one second when a bright light filled her bedroom. Then she saw a Man, and she knew who He was, even without her glasses, she knew it was Jesus. How she knew she didn’t know, but she knew it was Him. Surprisingly, try as Amy did she couldn’t bring herself to hate this Man now.
He spoke, “I’m here because of the prayer your dad said before you went to sleep, but also because I want you to know that you are not small and insignificant.” He smiled. His voice sounded like a choir, Amy thought.
“Would you like to sit on my bed, Jesus? I mean I know that sounds lame but…” But Jesus sat on the bed and took her hand.
“Yes it’s real, what you’re seeing now. I am here, the Jesus your pastor has been talking about.”
Amy gave a laughter of joy. “This is so cool! But why did You make me so ugly and different?”
Jesus looked hurt. “I didn’t create anybody ugly. I created everybody in Our image. Everybody is fearfully and wonderfully made. I gave you a body with everything you need, two eyes, a nose to breathe, a mouth to eat dinner and pray, a neck to support your head, two arms to help your mom in the kitchen, a stomach to eat all kinds of goodies, and two legs to jump and hop while you praise Me. Tell me honey, what more do you want?”
Amy sighed. “I don’t really know anymore. You make it sound like I have everything.”
“Yes, you do have everything if you trust me and love me. Otherwise as your Mummy said, you will not enjoy your life very much.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah, I was there in the kitchen with you,” Jesus said. They both burst into laughter.
The next day after school, Ashley said in her usual sarcastic tone, “Hey, changeling Amy, what are you all smiley about, your freckles?” Her two croonies burst into laughter.
“I feel sorry for you, Ashley. Because you don’t know what you’re talking about,” Amy replied.
“Excuse me?”
“I’m not you doesn’t mean I’m not pretty. And I’m not who you say I am. I am beautiful.”
“Says who?”
“I’m glad you asked. Says Jesus!”

It might be nice for Jesus to be able to come to each child and show what make them special. But that is not possible. But I am thankful that as each person grows they have the opportunity to look at God's creation and see where they fit in.
As children grow older they can then read the Bible and find out for themselves where they fit in to God's scheme of things in life.
While the children are young it is the parents to show their love so the child knows they are special.
You told a wonderful story, and certainly on topic!
Great job.
God bless~
