The sky is a beautiful clear blue with puffy cotton ball clouds. One of the clouds is changing. There is a bright light coming. Beautiful golden rays appear and....wait a minute....could it be? Oh! It's him! So brilliant and beautiful is the sight before my eyes. I reach my hands up and fall to my knees. Bowing my head and closing my eyes, I call out for him. “Jesus!”
Silence.
I open my eyes and I see my ceiling. It's the same dream over and over again. Rolling over, I struggle to get out of bed. These old bones just don't work like they use to. Standing up and reaching for my cane, my knees and joints crackle like a bowl of rice crispies.
Opening the door, I shuffle into the living room where my son and granddaughter sit visiting. They both smile at me and continue their conversation. I slowly sit down and my body sags down onto the couch like a sack of flour. I'm so tired and that little walk zapped my energy.
"Did you have a nice nap, Grandma?"
"Yes baby but I'm still so tired and I have a bad headache. Would you mind getting me some pain killers?"
"Of course I will."
Sighing, I settle back in the cushions and gaze out the window at the rose bush. How bright the red pedals are. A humming bird floats and flits about over the flower then zooms off out of sight.
My granddaughter gets up and comes back with a glass of water and two pain killers. My hand shakes as I reach for the glass and after a few tries, I finally get the pills in my mouth. The glass in my hand shakes so bad the water is dangerously close to spilling.
"Grandma, let me help you with that," she says softly.
"Thank you, baby."
After swallowing the pain killers, I say, "Sissy, I had that dream again. I keep walking down the same road and there are obstacles in my way and the road ends. I see Jesus in the clouds. I wonder what it means."
Sissy gently strokes my cheek and smoothes my hair. "I don't know Grandma but it sounds like it has a beautiful ending."
Daily life goes on with endless doctor appointments. The doctors patiently listen to my vivid descriptions of my aches and pains, pat my hand and tell me they find nothing wrong.
The days and months go by. I'm so blessed to see my whole family this year at a wedding. All my babies in one place. My children and my grandbabies. So blessed and joyful my heart is. My husband would be so proud if he were here to see it. Our beautiful family. My heart aches with missing him so. Someday I will see him again.
The long trip back home is exhausting.
I touch my son's arm and say "Baby, Mama is tired; I think I will go shut my eyes for a little while."
"Okay Mama, rest well. I love you."
"I love you too, baby."
I shuffle into my room and slowly lie down. Oh that feels so good. My head is pounding again. I will just shut my eyes and relax. Maybe the pain will go away.
The road is free of obstacles now, I walk slowly to the end. This time there is someone there, waiting for me with open arms. He envelops me and holds me close; my sweet husband. Oh my darling. How I have missed him! I look over his shoulder and see Jesus! He wraps his arms around us both and holds us in a warm embrace.
Taking a deep breath, I exhale and continue down the road with my two loves.
