It wasn’t an audible voice, merely a persistent whisper, spiralling around his mind, before coming to rest in his spirit, like a dove fluffing her wings before settling into her nest in the cool evening breeze. Luke leaned back in his chair, an enigmatic smile playing across lips that gave a humming sound to the tune in his sub-conscious. He raked a hand through floppy hair, chasing it out of his eyes and shuffled sneaker clad feet into a more comfortable position. Pen poised, eager to make contact with paper, he paused for a moment, involuntarily discerning the source of the whisper, yet not lingering long enough to acknowledge the words.
“Honour Me!”
His pen slashed like jagged lightning over the paper, making him chuckle at his own ingenuity, his inane and coarse sense of humour surfacing from a mind not yet fully in tune with his new found faith. Glimpses of Miss Turner swiped across his mind; nurturing, challenging, encouraging his newly emerging talent. He wrote with a passion she had rarely witnessed in a pupil and had often wondered at the changes in him, as if the ice was cracking, melting the hardness that encased his soul. He loved a challenge and this particular assignment would be a masterpiece, a play on words, a gem of literacy. ‘HUM’! He could do a lot with a word like that.
“Honour Me!”
Luke ‘felt’, rather than ‘heard’ the source of the voice, a reminder of that indefinable joy that had bubbled up from his soul and lifted his spirit to a place beyond his understanding, as he had surrendered his heart to Jesus. He didn’t want to go back to the person he was before, but it was hard letting go of his former ways and sometimes his old cynical self returned, as a buffer for his insecurity. He had found an identity in his writing, going to places in his mind that excluded the physical.
Eyes closed against the harsh light of the desk lamp, he sat quietly, allowing random images freedom of expression. ’HUM’! He liked the sound of it and scrawled it out in heavy black capitals across the page.
A picture of a girl, small and delicate, auburn curls tinkling around an elfin face, suddenly lodged itself in his consciousness. He had met her in the supermarket, her dulcet tones lilting in stark contrast to the cacophony of everyday sounds.
“That’s a lovely melody! What’s the song?”
Luke hadn’t realised he was humming.
“It’s”
Desperate to cover his embarrassment he was about to tell her it was the latest number one chart topper by ‘One Direction’, when that persistent whisper began drifting into the chasms of his mind again, wrapping itself like tendrils around his heart.
“Honour Me!”
“It’s a song I sang in church last Sunday. It’s called, ‘Jesus You are changing Me’!”
She had smiled and walked away, the toss of her head telling him she just didn’t want to know! It felt like she had ripped his heart to pieces, the tender shoots of his new life in Jesus wilting from lack of water.
Luke forced his thoughts back to Miss Turner, the way her grey eyes lit up when she was reading his work, how a teardrop sometimes lingered in one corner as she read the harshness sometimes vented in his frustration, or the way her lips pursed at his humour, cleverly written, yet so devoid of emotion. She often commended him for his passion for the written word, at the same time encouraging him to open his heart to what lay within.
“Luke, let the real you come through; show me who you are, what you feel, where you go in that wonderful mind of yours.”
‘HUM’. He would take a risk with the word and title his latest offering, ‘The Persistent Whisper’.
His pen moved slowly, confidently, across the page, almost as if guided by an unseen hand. He hummed a song as he wrote, finding the will to be obedient; sweet surrender of his talent back to the Giver. He knew she would understand, would pick up the deep love of his Saviour now embedded in his heart and soul. He could almost see the tears that would flood her tender eyes as she read his first testimony to his new love, a love he knew must be placed above the talent God had given him.
“Honour Me!”

I was a bit confused at the change of scenes.
I agree that all we do should bring honor to the Lord.
