Back in the mid 1960's the hippie movement was in full swing. This was an era when the philosophy was of peace, love and community. It was a time of “free love”, peace and substance abuse. It was a time when that generation rejected the middle class values and teaching of previous generations before them. It was a time that was summed up well in the song by the Young Rascals in 1968 entitled People Got to be Free. One of the verses summarizes it well.. “all the world over, so easy to see - people everywhere just wanna be free. Listen, please listen, that's the way it should be - peace in the valley, people got to be free.” The essence was don't be bound by rules, regulations or morals. You are free to be whomever you wish to be. There are no rules.
It seems since the beginning mankind has been looking for freedom to do as they please. It started in the Garden of Eden when Eve was tempted by the serpent to have the knowledge of good and evil. (Genesis 3:2-5) It was an offer she could not refuse. No one wants to be bound by anything, they just want to be free to live their lives as they please. How ironic that the very thing people are searching for is right in front of them. Jesus Himself said, “I am come that they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10) Sounds like freedom to me, doesn't it to you?
One of my favorite verses is found in Isaiah 61:1 “The spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captive, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound.” The last part of that verse talks about proclaiming liberty to the captive and about opening the prison to them that are bound. That is the key to being really free. People do not want to be bound by morals and rules, so they set out seeking freedom. Instead they find themselves in bondage to the very things they thought would bring them freedom. They ran to sex, but did not find love. They ran to drugs and alcohol, but could not run from the emptiness within. They ran from commitment in relationships and instead they found loneliness. They found themselves enslaved by sin. Where did they go wrong? What is the key to freedom? It is found in John 8:32 & 36, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (v.32) and “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”(vs. 36)
Our freedom is in Christ. I have always heard it said that there is a “God shaped” hole in all of us. We try to fill that hole with everything (sex, money, power, greed, etc.), but the only thing that will fill that hole and make us truly complete is Jesus Christ. He alone truly holds the “key” to freedom!
