The earth looks flat to us, from where we see it. We look to the sky and see other astronomical objects all as spheres. However, how are we to know our planet is round?
Christianity has been accused of promoting the theory that the earth is flat as opposed to the wisdom of science that maintained it round for centuries. There is also a long history of society saying the world is flat.
Samuel Rowbotham in the 1800s wrote that the Bible and our senses say the world is flat. His successor in the flat earth movement, Lady Elizabeth Blount, formed the Universal Zetetic Society to promote a flat earth in accordance with the Holy Scriptures. Then in the mid 1950s Samuel Shelton started the International Flat Earth Society. Soon after satellite pictures showed the earth to be a sphere. Then, after the Apollo moon landings, the group held firm their position, maintaining footage was a Hollywood hoax. When Shelton died in 1971, Charles K Johnson took the reins and was linked to the Covenant People’s Church. It survived to 1980, then re-launched as recent as 2009 under Daniel Shelton.
Does the Bible say the earth is flat? Some say as Job 28:24, Job 37:3, Job 38:13, and Revelations 7:1 speak of the edges and ends of the earth, it suggests it is level surface. Isaiah 40:22 says “He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. He stretches out the heavens like a canopy, and spreads them out like a tent to live in.” The world Hebrew translates also as sphere.
Christianity is often accused of not aligning with science. There have been Christians and scholars throughout history claiming the earth was flat but the church did not recognize them and they were in the minority.
Only one perspective matters. Only one perspective is true; that is God’s view. We shared God’s view when we launched our view of earth into the heavens. Sharing God’s view is scientific fact, and the earth is a ball.
