We all need a sense of significance. But it is so easy to lose sight of what true worth is when so much emphasis is placed on the trappings of wealth and worldly acclaim. In today’s world, a high premium is placed on glory and recognition, and so celebrities receive a great deal attention and adoration.
Professional counselor, Robert S. McGee, in his book “The Search for Significance” explains that many people spend their life searching for love, acceptance, and success from others. He points out, however, that their critical need is to discover God’s love and acceptance.
As a young person, I felt I could not measure up to people who seemed to have everything. I was unsure of my true identity as I compared myself with others. I didn’t like the picture I had of myself and struggled to find a sense of self.
Many people, like me, crave after earthly acclaim without an understanding of the great reality of God’s love and the high value he places on us. An important biblical teaching is that man was created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-28). However, because of the Fall, our minds have been blinded to this truth. This causes us to think that we can find true value in our lives without a relationship with our heavenly Father.
The message of the Gospel focuses our attention on true significance. I have come to realize, as a believer, that life with meaning begins with an acceptance of who I am in Christ. This comes with the understanding that God sent his Son to die because of his great love for me. The acceptance of Jesus’ work of grace helps us as believers to understand our true worth. This awesome reality is far greater than fleeting worldly recognition.
As believers we are significant in Christ Jesus. We are described as salt and light in the world (Mathew 5:13, 14). Consider the practical implications of these two commodities. We need light to see, in order to find our way around, and salt to add flavor to our food. What would we do without salt and light?
In the same way, beievers enjoy a life of purpose. As channels of Jesus’ life (John 15:5), we light up a dark world with God’s love. Besides, we add taste to our world, so in the place of resentment and bitterness, we bring peace as we allow Jesus’ life to flow through us. Indeed, we experience the greatest significance of all.
