As I slowly folded the letter and placed it back into the envelope, I remembered the initial mammogram three weeks ago. It was routine, or so I thought. Nevertheless, I wasn't quite prepared for this next process.
“Mrs. Brown, please wait here while the Radiologist reviews the film. It will take a few minutes,” said the technician.
“Thank you.” I replied, as I tightened the gown once again and opened my prayer book. “Well,” I need not fear. “No weapon formed against me shall prosper, and any tongue that rises up against me shall be condemned says the Lord,” (Isaiah 54:17), echoed in my mind.
“Mrs. Brown”, I'm Dr. Clemson. “How are you today.?”
“Fine,” but not really.
“Well, I took a look at the film of your left breast. There is something there. We call them calcifications. That is why we had you come back, to re-check you.”
“Can I take a look?”
“Sure. See?” pointing to the film. “It's microscopic, about .1cm. But, due to these calcifications, it's hard to tell. That's why we're recommending a biopsy, and It must be done RIGHT AWAY. You can schedule it at the front desk as soon as possible. Are you familiar with the procedure?”
“No, not really.”
“We will use a needle to remove some breast tissue to determine whether or not it is cancerous. The procedure is minimally invasive. There is a very good chance it is non-cancerous. Any questions?”
“No, but I don't think anything is there”, I said, but, He didn't hear me.
Deciding to believe God and not man is always a challenge. I was afraid, but, I had faith in Jesus. I began anointing myself, praising God and calling specific intercessors for prayer. Making the appointment for two weeks out was perfect timing, because each day reminded me that God is Jehovah Rophe, my healer.
On the return visit, the technician stated some prep work would be done, to ensure the right spot for the incision. More X-rays which, seemed like an eternity. However, as I lay face down on the biopsy table, I felt peace.
“I apologize for the delay, but, Dr. Mintz is reviewing the film again,” said the technician in a comforting tone.
“OK.” You know, that name sounds familiar ---- Mintz.
My mind drifted back to the year 2000, the first mammogram where I was also given a bad report. “You must come back for follow-up tests,” said the technician.
And after the second set of x-rays back then, Doctor Mintz spoke to me and said there is NOTHING THERE. The exact words, of which I will never forget: “It looks as if the calcification, the mass, just dispersed.”
Unbelievable, eight years later, the same radiologist ...and I know the same outcome.
“Mrs. Brown?, said Doctor Mintz in an elevated tone, as he entered the room. “ It looks as if we will have to cancel the procedure. You can go home.”
“And why is that?” I smiled slightly, while still laying face down on the biopsy table.
“Because we are unable to find anything. What appeared there before, just seemed to disappear.”
(DISAPPEAR, DISPERSE-- thank God for the 'D's').
“You know, that's almost the same thing you said in 2000, I was here for a follow-up, on the same side. I don't know if you remember me.”
“Really? Let me take a look at your chart.” As he checked the chart, with the technician next to him, my spirit was leaping. I was so thrilled.
“You're right,” he exclaimed. “I see, we couldn't find anything then, either. Well, do you have any questions?”
“No, all I can say is “God is a healer”.
“You are right! He is. See you next year.”
“Thank you, Doctor.” And, thank you, Lord.
