It was just after two, the sky was dark and stormy looking outside. There was no sign of her anywhere. The house was quiet, too quiet. Jake and I stepped quietly off the landing and onto the hardwood floors. The front door was still locked tight. We walked down the entry hall and into the family room and on through to the kitchen.

There Jake went straight for our mark. He found it tucked behind the bread box. I grabbed some juice boxes and we sat down behind the center island. He smiled at me as he lifted the lid. I watched as the look on his face changed. Our eyes met and I knew something was wrong, very wrong.

“Dare gone,” he told me, as tears formed in his eyes. Jake was only three. He didn’t know how to handle these sorts of things like I did. I was four.

“Shh, don’t start that. I gotta plan.” I smiled at him, so he’d know everything was going to be okay. He wiped his face and smiled back. “Come on, follow me.” I told him.

I got up and checked out the counter top. The coffee maker lights were on. I knew not to touch it, I could get burned. We learned about that stuff at preschool when Firefighter Frank came.

“What’s it say Bubby?” Jake asked.

“That Mommy made coffee not too long ago.”

“Where is she?”

“I’m not sure, but we’ll find her little brother. Don’t worry.”

Jake followed me as I made my way to the laundry and then checked the den. We completed our search of the downstairs and decided to save the creepy basement for last. So we headed back upstairs in our search. We checked our rooms and our potty, but no luck. Then we tip toed into her room, maybe she took naps when we took naps?

If she was sleeping, neither one of us wanted to wake her. That was a lesson we both had learned well. We both got down and belly crawled to her bed and then popped our heads up real fast. Her covers were all nice and neat though. That’s when we heard the splashy sounds.

Mommy was in the bath tub! In the middle of the day, how silly was that? Jake opened the door and we found her hiding in a pile of so many bubbles we could only see her head and her hands!

“Mommy stole the cookies from the cookie jar!” Jake squealed!

Mommy almost jumped right out of the tub. I guess she wasn’t expecting us.

“Sam and Jake you scared Mommy!” She laughed looking very surprised to see us.

“You stole the cookies.” Jake chimed again.

Mommy smiled and looked at the cookies on the plate next to her coffee, “You mean the cookies you little criminals were after? You know better than to sneak out of nap in search of cookies. And Mommy can’t steal from a jar of cookies she baked herself, goofy boys!” Mommy put her right hand over her heart and swore, “I have not committed any crimes here officers.” She then followed by flicking bubbles at us and making us giggle.

Mommy sent us off to pick up our toys, while she finished her much needed “time out,” which is what she called her mid-day bath. I think that is pretty goofy. After that we made more cookies for the jar, which I think were the best Chocolate Chip cookies ever!

When Daddy got home, I asked him why Mommy had to be punished for a crime she didn’t really commit. Daddy looked over at Mommy with a funny look on his face. She just smiled and handed him a cookie.
