I tend to be a very busy person. I like activity, and new challenges. I don’t want to sit on the couch all day, well, most days, if I am to be truly honest. But I would like to, once in a while, have some real breathing room.
My busyness is mostly my own fault. It is not enough that I have a house, a husband, three dogs and a cat to take care of, but I am the first person who will stand up and say, ‘I’ll do it’. When asked to be part of a committee, or to make a cake, or to go on a trip, I’m in line. And don’t even think that I won’t want to go to that party, or have one at my house. I am ready and willing, even if the effort it takes to bring it all together just about slays me.
We also have four granddaughters, who live in another state. It is nothing for me to jump in the car and drive the seven hours to see them. I guess I should mention that I leave early Saturday morning, and come home Sunday afternoon. Yes, then I have to be back at work on Monday. And while I am visiting, I also find time to visit the rest of my family and have breakfast, lunch, or dinner with my old friends.
So, by the time I arrive back home, you know it, I am T I R E D. But I get rested up, get things ready for work the next day, and then I’m back in the swing of things.
All this, and church and work too. I mention church because we are very active with ours. We love our church family, and it is an honor to serve the Lord with them. We take our service seriously, but somehow we manage to have a lot of fun along the way. My work is the same. I still serve the Lord in that I do the best I can, and I am committed to my company, and to my co-workers. We all help one another and I do put in long hours, even working from home evenings and weekends.
My only issue is this…I have trouble finding time to spend with God.
Shame! He should be first, not last. He should be on top of the list, not the bottom. There should be no question that my loyalties lie with him first, and others second. But I find that my schedule, my earthly duties, my very life, makes quiet time difficult to achieve. No, it’s not like that all of the time, but a good part of the time that is exactly how it is.
So, I have realized my life is time-consuming. In other words, the activities I choose to participate in eat away at my days, hours, minutes. I go from one task to another, from one place to another, meetings, gatherings, etc. It is like I cannot take a minute to just say ‘ah’. And that is not the way God wants me, or you, to live our lives.
Since He created us to be His hildren, He obviously wants to spend time with us. And when we get too busy to do so, He misses us, and we miss His blessing. Because meeting with Him on a regular daily basis is exactly what we need. How else can we have relationship with Him? How else can we tell Him how we love Him and how else can we come to know Him, as He wants us to know Him?
I have learned to MAKE the time. It is hard sometimes, but I do it. I actually have learned the value of saying, ‘no’. It doesn’t have to be me doing everything. He is more important than any meeting, or any friend. He is more important than family. He is, after all, my heavenly Father. So I make sure now that I dedicate a portion of my day to Him. I pray, I speak to Him, I read His Word. I listen. I try to stay close to Him at all times, but it is those quiet times that bring His heart into mine, and that bring blessing to my soul. And, I like to think, to His!
