Twenty minutes earlier Mrs. Darville had commented out loud that she had hoped the road she was turning onto was the right one. She had said it in a carefree way with a laugh thrown in for good measure. Twenty minutes ago it was an adventure. Now there was no laughing and the tension was thick enough to slice. May wished for the right road to appear. She wanted to go home and feel the flannel of her nightgown and the warmth of her bed. More than that, she wanted her mother to stop clutching the wheel and mumbling prayers under her breath. Neither were reassuring signs.
As Mrs. Darville was looking out of the left side of her window for a familiar landmark, an unexpected car cut in front of her. May gasped as her mother slammed on the brakes just in time to prevent an accident.
"You still up sweetie?," Mrs. Darville asked in a sugary voice as an attempt to reassure her daughter.
"Yes, Momma, " May answered cautiously.
"We're almost home baby girl." she said, then added "We should get there in just a few more minutes."
To drive home the point that everything was going to be all right, Mrs. Darville began to hum but couldn't decide on a tune. As she looked up to the car in front of her she noticed a sign in the window that stated: Follow Me to Jesus. It reminded her of the familiar song "I Have Decided to Follow Jesus" and it's upbeat melody often sung by the choir on Sundays. Not only did she start to hum the tune, but she became so entranced with the sign that she followed the car for a couple blocks. By the time she reached the chorus of the song she saw a road sign pointing the way toward the familiar highway that could bring them to their home. It was a prayer answered. With home in sight she stopped humming and started to sing out loud :
"I have de-ci-ded to fo-llow Je-sus," Momma sang in praise. May joined in joyfully "No turning back. No turning back."
